 Ananova:
Classic Cars Defy The Crunch

Stocks, shares and property may have taken huge hits in recent months, but some commodities at least, are immune from the credit crunch - classic cars.

Some of the world's most exceptional cars with a collective price-tag of over £20m are going under the hammer in London.

So if you fancy a Ferrari and have a spare £3m - you can bag Lot 274.

It is not only a pristine 1963 Ferrari 250 GT SWB California Spyder, it's the very same beauty driven by Cameron Diaz and Lucy Liu in the movie Charlie's Angels - Full Throttle.

But if you are more of a Bond fan, then Lot 216 could be more your style.

You can take solace from the fact the silver 1965 Aston Martin DB5 is cheap by comparison - a snip, at £150,000-180,000.

Among the 100 lots on offer is also a 1955 Ford Thunderbird which once belonged to Hollywood star John Travolta that is expected to reach a reasonable £30,000.

"Despite recent fluctuations in the financial markets, results from our recent North American events reveal a continued healthy outlook for the collector car industry and indicate the market for alternative investments remains strong," said Rob Myers, founder of RM Auctions.

Those with a taste for the unusual will also find something to satisfy their appetite at the Battersea Evolution auction, held by Mr Myer's in collaboration with Sotherby's.

Dorset mechanic Andy Saunders has 11 pieces for sale including a 1998 Suzuki Wagon R which he spent 300 hours transforming into an economic version of the Humvee.

It's also known as the "credit crunch Humvee" and the £10,000 price seems rather economical too.

The 45-year-old from Poole also spent three days building one of the world's flattest cars called 'Flat Out' - a 1989 Fiat 126 which he converted into a 22 inch tall sports car - it is expected to fetch up to £10,000.

None of the cars may top the more than £5m paid recently for actor James Coburn's 1961 Ferrari - making it the most expensive motor car ever sold at auction - but expect the cash to be flying out of wallets faster than the cars out of the auction room.
