 Ananova:
Vauxhall Workers Are 'Cautiously Optimistic'

Vauxhall staff have said they are "cautiously optimistic" following General Motors' announcement that it won't sell Vauxhall after all.

After long discussions, the GM board has scrapped its plans to sell its Opel and Vauxhall plants to Canadian car parts firm Magna.

The news has been welcomed by union leaders as the jobs of 5,500 staff members in Luton and Ellesmere Port would have been affected.

As workers arrived at the plant in Ellesmere Port today there was a mixed reaction to the news.

One worker told Sky News: "My gut instinct thinks it's good news but without knowing the full details and implications, we'll see where it goes. It just seems a bit bizarre to me."

Staff have had to cope with months of job uncertainty and cuts to working hours and pay but the leader of the Unite union has said the move is a "fantastic decision".

Another staff member driving in this morning said: "A deal's been signed and, you know, everyone's going to be in work and that's probably the main thing."

"We've had a three day week now for ages, we've lost money so now we're going to get some back," a third man added.

General Motors says it will now work with European labour unions to develop a plan for Vauxhall's restructuring.
