Tom Cruise's latest film Collateral has topped the US box office, taking £13.5 million in its first weekend of release.

In the movie, The Last Samurai star plays a hitman who hijacks a taxi to carry out a late-night killing spree.

Collateral knocked M Night Shyamalan's The Village into second place in the earnings list, with the horror thriller taking £9m over the weekend.

The Village was followed by The Bourne Supremacy, The Manchurian Candidate and Little Black Book.
