Reports that Avril Lavigne has got engaged to Sum 41 frontman Deryck Whibley are being denied.

The Sun said Avril said yes when Deryck popped the question in California at the weekend.

But Sum 41's management have put out a statement denying the story.

"Deryck Whibley of Sum 41 is not engaged," it said. "Deryck and his friends are constantly followed by paparazzi.

"The recent 'breaking news' that has been misconstrued around the world exemplifies the media's constant invasion of people's personal lives and reporting of unsubstantiated rumors and/or appearances."

Lavigne's camp says it has a policy of not commenting on her personal life.

The rumours started after Lavigne turned up at rehearsals for the 2004 World Music Awards wearing a diamond ring on her wedding finger.
