Celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay says his mother was a battered wife.

Ramsay spoke to the Daily Mirror about his family life with parents Gordon and Helen, sisters Yvonne and Diane and brother Ronnie.

He said: "I feel very deeply for any woman who is beaten by her husband. I had a father who beat my mum and I remember her taking me to school and wearing sunglasses in November."

His father Gordon died in 1999.

He added: "It's not an easy thing to deal with. I don't think any woman should have to put up with a man that hits them."
