Pianist Russ Conway, one of the Queen Mother's favourite entertainers, has died today after losing his battle with cancer.

The 75-year-old died in his sleep at Eastbourne District General Hospital, East Sussex, where he had been admitted 12 days ago.

He had been suffering from a recurrence of stomach cancer which had also spread to his brain. Conway had recently performed a sell out 75th birthday gala in Eastbourne.

His publicist John Lloyd said: "It is desperately sad, but he has gone out on a high note. He sold out the theatre and hundreds were queuing outside in the hope of getting returns. There will never be another Russ Conway."
