Franz Ferdinand lead the way at NME Awards

Franz Ferdinand have won two gongs at this year's NME Awards.

The band won the best album award for their self-titled debut album and best track for Take Me Out reports BBC online.

The Libertines were named best British band, but ex-frontman Pete Doherty did not attend the ceremony.

Doherty's mum Jackie phoned a hour before the show to say Pete was ill.

Doherty, who is due in court on Monday charged with robbery and blackmail, stayed in the rehab clinic where he is being treated for his drug addiction.

Radio 1 DJ John Peel, who died last year, won a special award for his lifetime services to music.

Other winners at the event included The Killers, who won best international band, Green Day went home with the best video award for American Idiot.

Razorlight were named best new band and the John Peel Award for Musical Innovation went to The Others.

Muse won best live band and former Blur guitarist Graham Coxon took the award for best solo artist.

Kaiser Chiefs were given the Philip Hall Radar Award. The prize honours the former Manic Street Preachers manager who died of cancer in 1993.

The best film award went to Shaun of the Dead; best TV show to Little Britain; and best event to the Glastonbury music festival.

Radio 1 DJ Zane Lowe won best radio show, while New Order won NME's "Godlike Genius" award.
