Mariah Carey has been named Favourite female R'n'B artist at this year's American Music Awards.

Accepting her award she said: "Thank you so much for the warmth and the love."

Destiny's Child won awards for Favourite Band and Album in the Soul and R'n'B category.

In the pop section Green Day gained more accolades for their American Idiot album, while Gwen Stefani won Favourite Female and the Black Eyed Peas were named Favourite Group.

The Peas also picked up the same award in the rap section, where Eminem was named Favourite Male Artist. He was beaten to the Favourite Album prize by his protege 50 Cent.

Coldplay were the only British act honoured as they picked up the Favourite Alternative Artist award.

Gwen Stefani, Pharrell, Eurythmics and Mariah Carey performed at the ceremony.

The Rolling Stones closed the show, performing live by satellite from a concert in Salt Lake City, Utah.
