Pitt walked out of the movie last week after it was delayed by the Hollywood writers' strike, reports Variety.com.

The film is based on an award-winning BBC TV series about a team of journalists working alongside police in a murder case.

The 2003 series starred David Morrissey and John Simm.

Film studio Universal is now trying to persuade Crowe to step into Pitt's shoes.

Edward Norton, Helen Mirren, Rachel McAdams and Robin Wright Penn are also in the cast.
