Johnny Depp says he was attracted to the role of bank robber John Dillinger by the twinkle in his eye. He has also confessed he enjoyed firing machine guns during filming of Public Enemies. Depp attracted big crowds as he hit the red carpet for the European premiere of the movie in London's Leicester Square. He stars as Dillinger in the film which pits him against Christian Bale as Melvin Purvis, the top agent of J Edgar Hoover's fledgling FBI. Depp told the Daily Telegraph: "I had a sort of fascination - not so much that he was a criminal, that this guy took up arms against the establishment and he did it with a smile. "There was a sort of twinkle in his eye which I find interesting." Public Enemies, which also stars Marion Cotillard as Dillinger's girlfriend Billie Frechette, hits UK cinemas on 1 July.
