 Ananova:
Channel 5^s answer to Big Brother to make debut

UK TV viewers will get their first chance to watch the latest Big Brother-style programme when Jailbreak is shown on Channel 5.

Ten "inmates" have been taken into the mock jail in Cuffley, Hertfordshire. They have three weeks to escape from the open jail - with the first to reach freedom winning a £100,000 cash prize.

The public can influence the outcome of the show by offering the prisoners escape advice via email and phone. The viewer with the best advice will win £20,000.

Former prison governor Jim Heyes will manage the prison staff, including the chefs, nurses and psychiatrists and a team of 35 prison officers. The daily routine will mimic the regime of a jail and prisoners will be subjected to 24 hours solitary confinement if they are caught escaping three times.

Less than 24 hours after being incarcerated, one inmate was on report and two others had personal belongings confiscated.

The inmates include a 51-year-old grandmother, a 22-year-old glamour model, an ex-para and a 20-year-old builder.

Ladbrokes make 32-year-old Ben Amponsah favourite with odds of 4-to-1. Mechanic Len Smith and 22-year-old Laura Hawkins are the outsiders with odds of 9/1.
