The Fighting Temptations (PG, 123mins) Comedy.
What the critics say: Damon Smith, Press Association: Singing superstar Beyonce Knowles takes on her first starring role in this light-hearted and instantly forgettable musical comedy. Some performances are a tad stilted but there are terrific, energetic set-pieces. Neil Smith, BBCi: The outcome is never much in doubt, but along the way British director Jonathan Lynn couples some tasty musical numbers with a generous serving of fish-out-of-water humour. FilmFour: The songs are everything in this feelgood musical, despite a flat performance from Knowles and a team of writers who clearly believe you can never have enough mawkish sentiment. Starring: Cuba Gooding Jr., Beyonce Knowles, LaTanya Richardson, Ann Nesby, Wanda Williams, Mike Epps, Angie Stone. Director: Jonathan Lynn. Released: December 12. Darrin Fox (Cuba Gooding Jnr) has just lost his job, owes thousands and needs cash fast. Then his rich aunt dies and he stands to inherit 150,000 dollars - so long as can meet a caveat in the will by forming a gospel choir and winning a prestigious competition. He duly recruits from a local jail and barber shop, and rekindles a romance along the way with his childhood sweetheart Lilly (Knowles). Beyonce even performs Swing Low, Sweet Chariot. Canny timing or what? Swearing: Yes Sex: No Violence: No |
