Guitarist Ted Nugent has slashed his leg with a chainsaw while filming his reality TV show about how to survive in the country.

The 55-year-old was on the set of Surviving Nugent: The Ted Commandments, when the incident happened.

MTV reports he is continuing to film the VH-1 show, despite needing 40 stitches in the wound and a leg brace to aid his recovery.

The reality series follows a group of city slickers trying to survive on Nugent's ranch in Texas. A two-hour pilot premiered in October and its six weekly episodes are scheduled for broadcast this spring.

Nugent's manager says the star was cutting down a tree to create a stump for a contestant to sit on when it started to fall in an unexpected direction.

The rocker shielded the falling branches from a female contestant and let go of his chainsaw in the process, which cut his leg.
