Roger Daltrey has spoken of the "pain" he experienced when The Who bandmate Pete Townshend was cautioned over child porn.
Last year was "horrible" because of the death of the band's bassist John Entwistle and the controversy surrounding Townshend, the singer said. But the 59-year-old believes that guitarist Townshend's "very stupid mistake" had made both band members rethink life. Daltrey told London's Evening Standard newspaper: "It was very painful. We both re-evaluated our life completely after that. "With Pete, I have watched a friend being brutalised for making what I think was a very stupid mistake - and I think there was nothing more to what he did than that. That was all very painful." He said bass player Entwistle's death in June 2002, following a cocaine-triggered heart attack, was a "huge loss". But he said: "It's kind of rekindled my belief that music transcends life. When we play live, John is alive in the music - the same way Keith (Moon) is. We can still feel the both of them there when we play." Townshend and Daltrey - drummer Moon died in 1978 after overdosing on drugs - are to record their first album in 21 years, followed by a world tour. |
