Depp wins screaming Bafta fans accolade

Johnny Depp has received an accolade - even before entering the Baftas ceremony.

The 40-year-old, who hails from Kentucky, arrived minutes before the ceremony was due to begin and was given the biggest scream of the evening by the hundreds of fans lining the Leicester Square red carpet.

Bafta organisers had earlier warned that the Pirates of the Caribbean and the Curse of the Black Pearl star might not turn up, despite being nominated for best actor for his Captain Jack Sparrow role in the movie.

Depp, who arrived wearing brown glasses, said: "I'm not a big fan of competition but it's nice to be nominated. It's always good to be recognised for one's work."

Renee Zellweger arrived in a fitted black dress which trailed to the floor and Cartier jewellery.

The actress, who is nominated for her supporting role in Cold Mountain, said: "The BAFTA's are always fun."

She added it was a "pretty neat thing to be nominated" and that there was "something really prestigious about BAFTA's."
