Return of the King becomes second most successful film

The final Lord of the Rings film has overtaken Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone to become the second highest grossing film - behind Titanic.

Screen Daily website says the Return of the King has taken £520m, while the first Harry Potter movie has taken £516.8m.

Titanic, released in 1997, has grossed £950m worldwide.

The Return of the King has broken records almost everywhere it has been screened. In the first five days after its release in December it took £64m.

It made its debut in Japan at the weekend at number one, and is set to pass £530m at the international box office this weekend.
