Harry Potter author JK Rowling has joined the list of the world's richest people.

She is estimated to be worth £526m and made her debut on Forbes' billionaires list at number 552.

Book sales, the money grossed from the two Harry Potter movies and toy sales has seen Rowling amass more than US$1bn.

The Duke of Westminster, Gerald Cavendish Grosvenor, is deemed to be the UK's richest citizen.

His US$8.7bn (£4,579m) fortune places him at number 36, ahead of the 17 Britons who made the list.

Behind him are Bhs owner Philip Green on US$5bn (£2,632m) and the Sainsbury family on US$4bn (£2,105m).

For the 10th year running Microsoft founder Bill Gates tops the overall list, with a net fortune of US$46.6bn (£24,526m).
