Seventies stars pay tribute to Mud frontman

Seventies pop stars have paid tribute to glam rock legend Les Gray at a charity gig he had been due to host before his death last week.

The Mud frontman, whose band topped the charts in the 70s with Tiger Feet, Lonely This Christmas and Oh Boy, died, aged 57, of a heart attack in hospital in Portugal, where he had lived for 12 years.

Gray, who had suffered from throat cancer for some time, was due to perform a duet with Alvin Stardust at the 70s-themed concert which went ahead last night as a tribute to the star in Glasgow.

More than 1,200 70s music fans attended the The Blast From The Past gig at the SECC's Clyde Auditorium.

Stardust led tributes to his friend Gray, while other performers, including Les McKeown of the Bay City Rollers and Marmalade also remembered the singer.

David Cassidy was featured via a live link from Florida, in the four-hour event, which organiser Caroline McFarlan, of Kidscharities UK, hoped would raise £10-£15,000.

She said: "It was an absolutely fantastic night for everyone, and it proved to be a wonderful, fitting tribute to Les."

Cash raised from the gig will go to the Anthony Nolan Trust, Childline and the Scottish Cot Death Trust.
