Dawn of the Dead has knocked The Passion of the Christ off the top of the North American box office chart.

The remake of the 1978 zombie classic took £14.9 million in its opening weekend, according to early estimates.

Mel Gibson's Passion earned another £10.4 million, bringing its four-week US takings to £161 million, to take second place.

Ethan Hawke thriller Taking Lives made its debut in third place while Starsky and Hutch fell to number four.

Johnny Depp's new film Secret Window, in which he plays a writer haunted by a man who accuses him of plagiarism, entered at No 5.
