Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed has topped the North American box office in its opening weekend.

It took £17.3 million, 43% less than the first Scooby-Doo movie but easily enough to claim the No 1 slot.

Second was the Coen brothers' The Ladykillers, starring Tom Hanks, with £7.3 million, reports Variety.

Mel Gibson's The Passion of the Christ was third with £7.1 million.

Dawn of the Dead was down to fourth place while Jersey Girl, starring Ben Affleck, Liv Tyler and Jennifer Lopez, took the fifth slot.
