Quiz expert Pat Gibson has become the fourth contestant to win £1m on ITV's Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? The 42-year-old Wigan-based Irishman had two lifelines remaining when viewers saw him resume in the hot seat after a three-week break. Gibson had reached £250,000 in his previous appearance and didn't need either of his lifelines to answer the £500,000 question. To win the £1 million, he was given the names of four major US horse races and asked to name which wasn't a so-called Triple Crown race. The father-of-two, who is a member of three quiz leagues in the north west, knew the answer was Arlington Million. But he used his 50/50 lifeline and then called friend Mark Kerr, who also said it was the Arlington Million. Gibson, originally from County Galway, in the West of Ireland, had previously helped Kerr win £250,000 on the same show. Gibson said: "When I saw the million pound question I knew the answer was Arlington Million but the stakes are so high at that stage of the game that it would have been foolish not to have used the lifelines." He now plans to spend some of his prize money on children Elizabeth, 10, and Noah, six. The other winners of the top prize were Robert Bridges in September 2001, David Edwards in April 2001 and Judith Keppel in November 2000. Gibson also applied to be on Mastermind, but the show's rules state no contestant can have appeared on any other quiz show within the same year. |
