The European premiere for the special effects-packed disaster movie about climate change was held at the Vue West End cinema in London's Leicester Square.

One of the stars of the film, Jake Gyllenhaal was joined by his actress girlfriend Kirsten Dunst at the premiere.

Gyllenhaal, star of cult movie Donnie Darko, said it was "incredible" to be in London with his girlfriend.

The actor said he did not regret making the film, adding: "I might have lost street cred, but I am going to get it back after they see the movie."

Co-star Emmy Rossum, who played his love interest Laura Chapman, was at the premiere wearing a strapless lilac Ralph Lauren couture dress.

She said her male co-stars had become like brothers during the film shoot.

She said: "I am an only child and I've always wanted an elder brother. It was fantastic."

The Day After Tomorrow was written and directed by Roland Emmerich, creator of Independence Day and Godzilla. He said that he would not be making any more disaster movies.

Film fans were covered in snow in Leicester Square as a reference to the climate change in the film.
