Early exit polls indicate that Al Gore could win the closely fought battle to become the 43rd President of America. They point to wins for Mr Gore in the key swing states of Michigan and Florida by between 2% and 3% of the vote. The current vice president also appears to be ahead in Illinois, another important battle ground. His rival George W Bush looks to be ahead in Wisconsin and Missouri. The result of the election could hinge on the state of Pennsylvania which polsters are saying is tied. The race is so close that some suggest it could end in a tie of the electoral college, with each candidate winning 269 votes. |
