 Ananova:
Thieves plunge airport into darkness

Romanian thieves caused chaos when they stole 300ft of electric cable from one of the country's main airports.

Lights went out and doors operated by electronic cards were locked for five hours in the flight planning and logistics centre at Bucharest's Henri Coanda airport.

The two thieves had planned to sell the cable for £120, local daily Adevarul reported.

They were later arrested after police found them at home with the cables in bags ready to be sold on.

Head of airport's police Dan Rosoga said: "All air traffic at the airport could have been put at risk. We were lucky that they stole the cables from the administrative part of the airport. Imagine what would have happened if they had stolen it from somewhere else.

"All operations had to be made manually for five hours, Also, the magnetic cards for access in the building blocked and the system need serious repairs."

Officials said the cost of repairs after the incident could be up to £40,000.
