A German student has broken a European record after growing an 88 stone pumpkin.
Bavarian Martin Reiss planted the pumpkin at the end of April and harvested it in September when it was 88 days old. The Austrian association for giant pumpkins, that weighed Reiss' specimen, said at 559.5kg (88.1 stone) the vegetable is the largest of its kind ever measured outside North America. Pumpkins are very popular in Central Europe, and during "pumpkin time" in early autumn are the stars of many local festivals as well as featuring heavily on most restaurant menus. |
