 Ananova:
Austrian hotel roof 'invades' Czech Republic

An Austrian hotel has been ordered to bring down part of its roof because it overhangs into the neighbouring Czech Republic.

Dietmar Hehenberger, the owner of the hotel, located in the Upper Austrian Guglwald, only 100 metres from the Czech-Austrian border, however refuses to do so

When it rains, water from the hotel roof falls into Czech territory violating an international agreement, which requires a one-metre-wide vacant belt on both sides of the border, reports Lidove Noviny newspaper.

Both Austrian and Czech authorities want the hotelier to remove at least part of the roof overhanging the border as a compromise but he has been reluctant to demolish it.

He claims expensive solar panels have been installed there and their relocation would cost his thousands of pounds.

Mr Hehenberger has appealed against the commission's verdict and in three weeks is set to defend his roof in court, blaming Austrian building authorities for approving his plans.

He said: "I have not caused the problem. So why should I have to pay dearly for someone else's mistake?"

Petr Vorlicek, a spokesman for the Czech Interior Ministry was qouted saying: “The case is no triviality, but an example of a state border violation and it cannot be swept under the carpet.”
