A golf tournament was held up in Australia when an armed robber drove onto the course in a stolen truck.

Golfers were stranded after police declared the sixth hole a crime scene and refused to let players through.

The robber crashed onto the course during the NSW Amateur Championship at Ryde-Parramatta Golf Club.

The man, who had allegedly just held up a supermarket, rammed through a fence and onto the fifth fairway.

Scattering startled players, he hurtled down the hole and into a bunker before becoming stuck.

The man, brandishing a shotgun and gripping a bag, then fled into a nearby empty house.

As police helicopters hovered overhead and 25 police cars rushed onto the course, a two-hour siege developed before the man finally surrendered.

New South Wales Golf Association director of golf Alex Johnston said: "A siege situation was created and we had to suspend play because the police closed off a perimeter.

"He was finally arrested about two-and-a-half hours later but we had four groups stuck on the sixth hole who couldn't play because the police said it was now established as a crime scene."
