 Ananova:
Vets from America join foot-and-mouth campaign

A team of vets has flown in from the US to join the war against foot-and-mouth as farmers warned the situation is still not under control.

The 20 Americans are among 125 vets from abroad who have come to help speed up efforts to control the disease.

Despite claims that the disease is coming under control, farmers in the North East say they are losing the battle.

Redent scientific projections had suggested measures to fight the foot-and-mouth outbreak were beginning to bite.

But a local branch of the National Farmers' Union warned things there could get 10 times worse because vital resources were being sucked into the Cumbria hotspot.

As the number of cases in the UK reached 1,028, Conservative leader William Hague said ministers should be thinking long term instead of being "obsessed with the daily numbers game".

In a speech, Mr Hague was also calling for the Government to use its emergency spending reserves to compensate farmers who have suffered.

Meanwhile, Agriculture Minister Nick Brown is set to tell MPs in the Commons that the effort to contain the disease would not be relaxed.
