A couple watching a romantic sunset on a bridge sparked a massive rescue operation in Germany.

A passer-by mistook Max Sonnenschein, 25, and his girlfriend Amelia Fuchs, 26, for suicide jumpers and called the police.

The couple had been watching the sun set over the River Main from the Kaiserlei bridge in the German state of Hessen.

A passing driver who saw the couple leaning on the rail assumed they were about to throw themselves over the edge.

Rescue officers from the fire brigade and police rushed to the scene only to find the couple locked in a passionate embrace.

A police spokesman said: "They had climbed over at least one barrier and were in a place they were not allowed to be.

"There was a massive operation to save them and they can now expect a bill for wasting police time."
