Thousands of people will gather opposite Downing Street as part of an international day of action marking the fourth anniversary of the start of the conflict in Darfur. A two-metre high hourglass of "blood" will be the centrepiece of the event as they demand civilian protection for Darfur. More than 200,000 people are estimated to have died in the bloodshed. More than 10,000 hourglasses will be turned over by activists around the world during Global Day for Darfur events. Campaigners say this underlines that the time is up to fail to protect the people of Darfur. A letter will be handed to a Government Minister at No 10. Organisers expect up to 3,000 people to attend. They include a group who have been marching to the event from Cambridge since Thursday. Celebrities have also made a public plea to governments to take action. Statements of support for the campaign were also issued by eight Labour politicians joining the race to be the party's next leader and deputy leader. Northern Ireland Secretary Peter Hain said the world was "once again looking away as genocide is committed".
