 Ananova:
Xmas air passengers may be stranded

Some air travellers were facing the prospect of not being able to get away for Christmas after British Airways cancelled more flights on Monday.

Although the fog that caused travel misery on Sunday had eased, BA had to axe 28 flights at Heathrow.

A spokesman for the airline said: "Due to the way things have gone, there may be those who won't get to where they want.

"We would expect to get as many people away as possible, but we can't rule out the possibility of some people not getting away. Our staff at the airport are working as hard as they can."

The GMB union accused airlines of using the fog as an excuse for the travel chaos that affected passengers on Sunday. The union's regional secretary Ed Blissett said: "This time of year if there is even a minor disruption, airlines and the handling companies that work for them are unable to cope because they run too many flights with too few staff. Simple as that."

All told, there were 30 flights cancelled at Heathrow on Monday, while six were axed at Gatwick and six at London City airport.

With temperatures rising, air passengers and road travellers enjoyed much better conditions on Monday after Sunday's poor visibility coupled with freezing temperatures.

However, some rail passengers had problems on Monday. Around 240 passengers on a London-Scotland sleeper train run by ScotRail were stranded for several hours after their train hit "some material" on the track at Beattock Summit south of Carstairs in Scotland.

No one was hurt but the train, which had left London's Euston station at 8pm on Sunday, was damaged and locos had to be sent to get the train into Abington just north of the accident site.

From there ScotRail laid on coaches which took passengers on to Aberdeen, Inverness and Fort William. Network Rail was looking into the cause of the accident.
