A gambler won £1million with a 50p bet - and never told his pals. Freddie Craggs even let his friends pick up the bill when they took him out for a 60th birthday dinner. John Pitt, who was at the meal on Saturday night with his wife Julia, said: "We didn't know we were dining with a millionaire." Mr Craggs came up trumps with a 50p bet on an eight-horse accumulator on Friday. All his horses won at combined odds of 2,798,000-1 - and the last winner was called A Dream Come True. He could have landed £1.4million but bookies William Hill have a £1million maximum payout. It's still the biggest amount ever won in a British betting shop for such a small stake. Mr Craggs, of Thirsk, North Yorkshire, only found out about his fortune on Saturday morning when he popped into a bookies in nearby Bedale to place another bet and asked the cashier to check his betting slip. The divorced father-of-three still hasn't claimed his winnings. William Hill spokesman Graham Sharpe said: "We have a cheque for £1m burning in our pocket and we can't wait to hand it over."
