A three-legged, one-eyed, hairless dog has hobbled away with the title of world's ugliest dog.

Gus, a pedigree Chinese crested dog, claimed victory in the annual contest in northern California.

Gus and his owner Jeanenne Teed travelled across the country from Florida to compete in the competition.

"I think right now he's ready for a nap," she said after his star turn.

She added that she would spend the £500 prize money on treatment for Gus's skin cancer.

Ms Teed entered her pet in the contest to raise awareness and hope for people whose pets have cancer.

Among a host of aesthetically-challenged pooches, the Chinese crested breed is often the stand-out in the competition.

Last year's winner, Elwood, was a Chinese crested and Chihuahua mix.
