 Ananova:
Hotel offers guide to Hull-speak

A Hull hotel has given its guests a guide to help them understand the distinctive local dialect.

The Holiday Inn Express has added an English-to-Hull translation document to their welcome pack to help visitors understand the local tongue, reports the Daily Telegraph.

Translations for key words, such as "skeg" (to look), "ballun" (crying) "myrrh-bile" (mobile phone) and "summatup?" (is something troubling you) have all been included.

It includes distinctive local pronunciations such as 'curled' (cold), 'dernt nerr (don't know), 'surfer' (sofa), 'yerolidiz' (your holidays) and 'Ezzel Rerd' (Hessle Road).

But the guide has provoked an angry response from some members of the local community, who consider it "insulting".

Marilyn Marsden, of Bilton, said: "I have lived in Hull all my life and our dialect is part of our heritage. I rang the hotel and spoke to the duty manager and I asked how he dared abuse Hull people. It is disgusting."

Luc Perquin, the general manager, said the response from guests had been "excellent" since he launched the guide three months ago.

"Everybody speaks it so why be embarrassed about it? The Hull accent is something that local people should be proud of because it is part of their identity" he said.

Mr Perquin, originally from Rotterdam, said he had problems in understanding the locals when he first arrived five years ago.

"Now I even use phrases like 'lass' for lady and 'nowt' for nothing, without realising it," he said.
