 Ananova:
Bog snorkelling record set

The annual Bog Snorkelling Triathlon in Wales has been won in a world record time.

Dan Bent /PA

The race, in Llanwrtyd Wells, was finished in a time of two hours, 21 minutes and five seconds by 30-year-old Dan Bent from Richmond, Surrey.

The women's title was claimed by his sister Natalie Bent who completed the exhausting course in three hours, 11 minutes and 55 seconds.

To cross the finish line, competitors have to run seven-and-a-half miles, complete two lengths of the town's infamous 135-foot long, six-foot deep bog and cycle 19 miles across demanding mountain terrain.

Mr Bent, a seasoned triathlete who is about to cycle 9,000 miles to India for charity, said it was one of the hardest events he has ever done.

"We did it last year and it seemed so much harder than last year," he said.

"I must have tried to numb the memory of it. On the run you are kept going up hill and up hill and then you have to run down rivers.

"On the bike you are having to jump off cliff edges as well. It is really, really tough but I love that stuff. There is nothing wrong with a bit of pain!"

Miss Bent, 26, from Maidstone, Kent, said she felt "on top of the world" to win the women's event.

Organiser Sheelagh Tompkins said: "It was a really, really good day and we had a little of a breeze for the competitors which was nice because it is such a gruelling event. Everybody had a brilliant time but they're all really tired now."
