 Ananova:
Chinese kids keeping cockroaches as pets

Chinese schoolchildren have started keeping cockroaches as pets - copying the stars of a Hong Kong TV programme that features a couple and their pet roach, Xiao Qiang.

Pet shops are cashing in on demand - in Guangzhou 250 grammes of the insects are selling for 65 yuan (over £5).

The Beijing Youth Daily reports that the fad has caused concern among teachers and officials about the quality of education and the effects of Hong Kong television on China's teenagers.

National People's Congress member for Guangzhou, Xu Yan, said: "We should provide better spiritual food for kids and strengthen kids' judgement so they don't just follow the TV series."
