Record E-coli outbreaks in US

More than 70,000 people in the US become ill and hundreds die every year after eating meat containing E-coli, according to new research.

The Centres for Disease Control research shows more people are becoming ill than ever before from eating the poisoned meat.

It also shows that a record amount of meat is being recalled from shops, Fox News reports.

Meat safety expert Jay Franks said: "It's an ongoing problem. Private industry, the government - everybody's working on this overtime. Killing people's bad for business."

Sara Lilygren of the American Meat Institute said: "Our industry, the meat industry, is very concerned and we've taken a lot of steps in recent years to try and reduce, and if possible eliminate, this germ from our products."
