George W Bush's derogatory remark about a New York Times reporter has been making headlines around the world - except in the journalist's own newspaper. While the Drudge Report and all the major US news websites have given the story full weight, the New York Times mentions it only in the 14th paragraph of an inside page story. Other Big Apple papers, the New York Daily News and the New York Post, have given it prominence. The Drudge Report says the story is its top hit - a point reinforced by Ananova, whose readers have made it the top story at several points during the day. Adam Clymer - called a "major league asshole" by the Republican presidential candidate - works from the paper's Washington bureau. But the newsdesk there and in New York were not prepared to make any comment about the remark, or the paper's editorial decision not to give it prominence. In an article entitled "Bush Derides Gore For Rejecting Debate Plan", the paper only mentioned the gaffe after discussing the intricacies of a spat between the two presidential candidates. The 14th paragraph even plays the incident down, reading: " . . . his words were picked up by a television microphone, though they were barely audible." |
