A landlord who failed to keep her properties safe and clean has been sentenced to live for two months in one of her rundown, cockroach-infested Californian apartments. Linda Arciaga will also have to wear an electronic monitoring bracelet to ensure she stays in the apartment block all the time. The unusual punishment is the first time such a sentence has been imposed in San Jose. Arciaga was given the sentence for violating an injunction that requires absentee landlords in the city's Santee neighbourhood to maintain safe and clean properties. Arciaga, who owns two apartment buildings, says she has not been given enough time to fix them. The apartment that is to be her home for the next two months has a number of problems, including a broken oven, only one working stove burner, a shorted electrical socket and a plague of resident cockroaches. |
