The designer of a US university directory has filled its cover with pornographic images by mistake.

Samford University's 100-page directory - distributed to thousands of students - features a cover image of model Christy Turlington and a mosaic of hundreds of small photos of nude women and explicit sex acts.

The cover's artist, graphic design student David Carrigan, says he took the uncopyrighted image from a website but says he did not realise it contained the pornography.

He said: "I surely would not have used the image had I known the content of the small photographs. I am personally opposed to pornography and its effect on society."

Vice-president of the Alabama university Richard Franklin says Mr Carrigan will be disciplined, but there are no plans to recall the directory.

Surprised first-year student Natalie Gavin said: "They won't let us have MTV, but we've got pornography on the directory."
