Christina Aguilera has accused Britney Spears of not being a "proper" artist.

She also says Spears kissed Madonna at the recent MTV awards in America because she needed a gimmick to keep fans interested.

"These people aren't artists, they're just performers - fake and superficial, like the entire event," said Aguilera.

Aguilera, speaking to Blender magazine, even suggested Britney mimed her way through her act, reports the Daily Mirror.

Aguilera also criticised MTV for their coverage, saying: "I'm very disappointed. Just look at the way they handled the kiss I had with Madonna. They didn't even screen my kiss properly - they cut away instead for a Justin Timberlake reaction shot. How predictable and how pathetic."

She said she had suggested she kiss Britney before Madonna was booked to appear, but Spears refused and insisted on snogging Madonna instead. "I was up for it but she wasn't," said Aguilera.
