Two Welsh companies have been fined after thousands of fish died in a polluted river. Hyder Utilities (Operations) Ltd was fined £2,500 and Welsh Water Plc £2,000 for the incident on August 11 last year. Welsh Water pleaded guilty to a charge of discharging trade effluent to the Afon Syfynwy, in Pembrokeshire, south west Wales. Hyder Utilities pleaded guilty to causing polluting matter to enter controlled waters, for which it was fined £2,000, and causing waters to be poisonous to fish, for which it was caused £500. Haverfordwest Magistrates ordered Hyder Utilities to pay £13,021 towards the costs of Environment Agency Wales, which brought the prosecution. Some 6,000 fish, mainly brown trout, were killed when a substance from the Rosebush/Preseli Water Treatment Works was released into around 3.1km of the Llys y Fran reservoir. |
