Madonna has revealed why she's changed her name to Esther.

She says she has adopted the ancient Hebrew name to get away from the energy of her mother who was also called Madonna.

Madonna said she became spooked about having the same name as her mother who died when the singer was aged just five.

Madonna, now 45, told a US TV show: "My mother died when she was very young, of cancer, and I wanted to attach myself to an other name.

In one of her most open interviews to date, she also admitted to having "brought a lot of chaos to people's lives because of my selfish behavior".
