 Ananova:
Vaughan backs Flintoff

Former England captain Michael Vaughan believes Andrew Flintoff will put his latest brush with discipline aside to ruffle Australia.

All-rounder Flintoff landed himself in trouble last week after missing the team bus during a bonding trip to Belgium. Vaughan feels current skipper Andrew Strauss dealt with the matter well and now expects Flintoff to deliver when the Ashes series begins in Cardiff on Wednesday.

Vaughan told BBC Radio Five Live's Sportsweek programme: "I think everything will be answered on Wednesday when he comes out and does that once again."

He added: "I think he (Strauss) has handled him very well. It is a difficult position to be in when something like that happens. He [Flintoff] came out and apologised, he obviously had done something wrong.

"He has apologised to all the team and come out and bowled with aggression and passion for the team against Warwickshire."

Vaughan announced his retirement from all forms of cricket this week after failing in his attempts to win a place in the initial training squad.

The former world number one batsman, who stood down as skipper last summer, had hoped to regain his place after missing the recent series against India and the West Indies. However, his form for Yorkshire did not merit inclusion and he felt the time was right to retire.

Vaughan memorably led England to Ashes success in 2005 and will now only be an onlooker as Strauss' side look to repeat the feat.

He said: "The team looks to be in a good place, they have made a lot of good positive steps over the last few months.

"I think Strauss and (coach) Andy Flower are building up a great partnership. I think they have got a great chance but it will be very close."
