 Ananova:
Price strikes gold for Britain

Britain's Sarah Price won gold in the women's 100metres backstroke on day two of the FINA World Cup meet in New York.

Price had qualified for the final as favourite, but was not counting on victory having been forced to settle for silver when favourite in the previous evening's 200m backstroke final.

The 24-year-old dug deep in the last 50m to catch and pass Canadian Jennifer Carroll and finish in a solid time of one minute 0.39 seconds.

Carroll touched in third (1:00.73) behind second-placed American Haley Cope (1:00.47).

The men's 50m freestyle event looked to be another opportunity for a British victory with world record holder and British veteran Mark Foster due to take part.

But Foster chose not to race, and instead will stay committed to his training regime in The Race Club, Florida.

Foster, whose record for the 50m has stood for three years, is loving life in Florida.

"Not many people can say they get up in the morning and swim in the sunshine, go home to play some backgammon, then come back and train in the sun again in the afternoon," said the Brit.

Foster's lifestyle is a far cry from countryman Matthew Kidd, who after producing an impressive display on the opening night in New York, went on to take fifth in the 50m freestyle.

Kidd's time of 21.96secs saw him once again improve on his heat time and claim a solid finish having been seeded seventh.

Price's victory provided some good on an otherwise low key evening for British swimming, which also saw David Leith take seventh spot in the men's 100m butterfly.

Much of the junior squad who shone at the European legs of the World Cup did not travel to New York with Team GB, who chose to send a select squad and continue the focus on training.
