Lennox Lewis' former trainer Frank Maloney admitted that many people in Britain did not warm to the world heavyweight champion. Maloney was speaking after Lewis had announced his retirement from boxing, emulating legends Rocky Marciano and Gene Tunney by walking away with his title intact. But he was not always held in great affection by the British public, having won a gold medal for Canada in the 1988 Olympics, despite reigning supreme for so long. Maloney told Sky Sports News: "Because he didn't concentrate on Britain people didn't warm to him." Maloney admitted he and Lewis "had our differences" but added: "He thanked a lot of people but did not thank his British fans. They see him as more of a global star. "At the end it all worked out well and he retired at the top of his trade. "He was right to say that defeats are not the end of the world. It is part of the rebuilding and shows your true character. He learned from his losses and became a better fighter."
