Jos Verstappen has set his sights on a drive in the United States after he was overlooked for the last spot on the Formula One grid. The Dutchman, who is backed by substantial sponsorship money, was favourite to land the second seat at Jordan after leaving Minardi last year. But the Silverstone-based team were unhappy with Verstappen's agent and pulled the plug on the deal, installing Giorgio Pantano as their number two driver for this season instead. With no obvious route back into Formula One, Verstappen has launched a frantic bid to find a job for this year. The Champ Car World Series in the United States is a likely option, while the rival Indy Racing League also comes into the equation and a Formula One test drive is a distant possibility. He told his personal website: "We are talking with Formula One teams but also looking to America. There is, however, still nothing concrete but we will talk very fast." Verstappen began his career as Michael Schumacher's Benetton team-mate in 1993 but while the German has gone on to six drivers' titles, his Dutch counterpart has struggled with uncompetitive teams, his best results being two third places in 1994.
