Jules O'Neill capped a masterly performance for Widnes Vikings with a try seven minutes from time that ended Hull's determined resistance. The Vikings led 25-18 when O'Neill struck the killer blow and he added the conversion and a drop goal to wrap up a 32-18 victory. Hull had got off to a flying start with a third-minute try from Sean Briscoe, who raced over from 30 metres after Paul McNicholas had sent him clear. Paul Cooke added the conversion to give the visitors a 6-0 lead. Swift handling by Hull saw them extend that advantage with Shayne McMenemy crashing over for a try. On 22 minutes Hull were hit with the ultimate sucker punch that came in the form of Vikings centre Adam Hughes, who caught a Stephen Myler bomb to score the Vikings' first try. O'Neill knocked over the conversion and was in the action again as he landed a penalty to reduce the gap to two points. Myler was beginning to give Hull some headaches and when another high kick was put up in the corner Chris Giles was on hand to score under some considerable pressure. O'Neill converted to give the Vikings a 14-10 lead before Cooke added a penalty to put the game on a knife-edge at half-time. A simple mistake from Vikings full-back Steve Rowlands, straight after the break, resulted in a converted Cooke try which saw Hull regain the lead at 16-14. Widnes hit back with an O'Neill penalty and another four-pointer. This time it was winger Nicky Royle who went over with 20 minutes remaining. Hull were tiring and they were caught cold, again out wide, when Steve McCurry crashed over from short range to put some daylight between the two teams. From this point on, the Vikings were in complete control and O'Neill finished Hull off with a drop goal, a converted try and a second drop goal.
